Podgorica, Montenegro 🇲🇪
September 23rd - 30th
What lovely surprise Podgorica turned out to be. We had very little knowledge of the capital city of Montenegro. When planning the remainder of our time in Europe, a bus ride from Žabljak to Tirana Albania was a way too long. We decided to make a stop here for a week and we both are very happy we did.
When making the plan for this time frame we found that our AirBnB host in Žabljak, Neda, had an AirBnB in Podgorica and we were spoiled with more homemade cheese and Rakija in the refrigerator when we arrived. Funny little side story, the morning of our first day, Annette grabbed what she thought was a bottled water and had a big gulp. It was the Rakia. That made my day, her first experience with Rakija was memorable to say the least.
The day we arrived was very lovely weather and we walked to the city center just to explore and get acquainted with the city. We both really enjoy walking and exploring on our own and Podgorica is a wonderful city to do just that.
There is an interesting mix of architecture here, some beautiful old buildings in Petrović Palace, and the Church of St. George to very imaginative buildings of the communist era (my tongue is firmly in cheek). This city like so many in the Balkans is going through a building boom and there are some very beautiful newer buildings as well, such as the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ (Serbian Orthodox) and the Moscow Bridge as well as the Millennium Bridge.
There are plenty of parks and green space around the city and we enjoyed walking and observing the locals just living and enjoying life in this beautiful little city.
One downside, for me was I was suffering from allergies and there was a day of heavy rain that kept us inside. This did give us an opportunity to continue planning for next year.
The food scene was much better here and Annette found an Indian restaurant that she found while watching a YouTube video about the area. Masala Art masalaart.me It was so good we went three times during our short stay. The service, atmosphere and food was truly amazing. Since we had been missing the international food scene we also found a wonderful Asian Restaurant Zheng He, Zheng-he.me this place was fantastic and we enjoyed the service and experience here as well.
We will definitely plan to come back and visit since I did not really feel up for some of the day trips we wanted to do, such as Ostrog Monestary and Plantaze Winery Wineryplantaze.com/en/. Montenegro is a beautiful country with plenty of outdoor activities and friendly people. Put Montenegro on your travel list, it is definitely worth visiting.
